How to Have a Winter Themed Children’s Birthday Party

When your child has a winter birthday, one of the things that parents often worry about is how they can make the birthday fun, since a lot of times they’re not able to go outside. But there are a lot of things that can be done for a winter birthday to make it fun for the kids. Below are some tips that you can use to help your child’s birthday be exciting and fun for all.

Invitations

When you are creating your invitations, it’s a good idea to integrate things into them that are related to winter. These are things like ice skates, penguins, snowflakes, trees covered in snow, snowballs, or snowmen. You could even choose one as the shape of your invitations. You also can print your party information on a card stock in light blue and then use rubber stamps to decorate your card in silver or white ink.

You can also use postcard pictures that are of winter scenery, maybe with your son or daughter posing in front of a wintery backdrop to create a fun and stylish party invitation for a winter party.

Setting Your Scene

The tips below for ambiance and decorations will help you with transforming the place where you’re having the party into a beautiful winter wonderland.

  • Use a lot of twinkling lights in the color white to decorate the interior of the house. When you use them as your party’s main light source, this will set a very soft mood. Choose lights that are snowflake or icicle shaped or choose the typical white lights. The winter shaped one will help with enhancing your winter theme.
  • Create snowflakes from paper and then hang them from your ceiling. Remember cutting these out when you were a child? Now you can do it as an adult and even have your birthday child help you. You can use white ribbon, clear colored fishing wire or string to hang them. Create a lot so that everyone thinks they’re in a ‘blizzard’.
  • A great way to wish someone a happy birthday is with one of the many banners that have Happy Birthday printed on them. But there is a better way to do it when you are having a winter birthday. You can create icicles out of white felt, then cut the letters to form the words “Happy Birthday” out of felt in light blue. Then sew or glue those letters. Attach the icicles to strings and then hang the banner where everyone can see it.
  • If you’re not interested in using fabric, this can be done with paper as well. Use a program for word processing for printing out your letters in blue ink on white cardstock. Then cut the pieces into the shape of an icicle.
  • Hang pompoms made from tissue paper using light blue and white tissue paper.
  • Play music that is winter-themed during your party, like Winter Wonderland or other songs you hear during the winter season. You don’t have to choose Christmas music; you can simply choose songs that have the word ice, snow, winter, or cold in their lyrics or title.
  • Ask that your guests are wearing light blue or white clothes to your party.

Activities and Games

  • Snowman Bowling – This is a fun game that you can play inside or outside. If you’re playing outside in the snow, carve out a lane in snow. If you’re playing inside, you can put a white runner on your floor. You should have ten penguins, snowmen, snowflakes or reindeer printed on poster board. Color the items in and then cut the items out before taping them each to a two-liter bottle that’s empty. Set those bottles up like they’re bowling pins and give the child a ball that’s white for their bowling snowball. Stand at the lane’s end and then roll the snowball so that the pins are knocked over. Keep score as you do with real bowling.
  • Marshmallow & Straw Race – All the kids should be sitting at a table. Put a paper cup or mug before each player. Scatter some miniature marshmallows on the table and supply each child with a straw. Set your timer. The children have to use their straw to suck the marshmallows up and then drop each marshmallow into their cup. When the time has run out, you count their marshmallows. Whatever child has the most will win. When you’re done playing, fill their mugs using hot chocolate and allow them to enjoy their marshmallows.
  • Pin the Nose on the Snowman – This is like pin the tail on the donkey except the kids are pinning the nose on the snowman. Cut out a snowman and make carrots. Then play as you would play the other version so that each child can pin the carrot on the snowman.

Wintery Party Food

  • Put a table for candy with jars full of candies that have a winter theme such as M&Ms in light blue and white, pretzels covered in yogurt, marshmallows, gumballs, Mentos, and Jordan almonds. Just be mindful for younger guests since they can choke on some of them.
  • Besides your candy table, you can have cupcakes with wrappers that have a wintery theme like snowflakes or snowmen.
  • Create gorgeous snowflake-shaped cookies.
  • Make a snowman out of three round cakes. You can use candy accessories and colorful icing for decorations.
  • Create a delicious and fun bar so that guests can have their favorite flavor of hot chocolate. Have whipped cream, marshmallows, peppermint sticks, or even chocolate candy or ice cream!

Favors

Your guests are going to love making their own favor or having a tasty treat to take home with them. Below are some favor ideas you can use for your party.

  • Have the kids make their own non-meltable snowman. You can use Styrofoam balls and give them lots of fun accessories that you have made ahead of time to create their own snowman.
  • Decorate candy bars with snowmen. Wrap a large candy bar using white paper and then decorate as a snowman.
  • Make trail mix using cereal that is frosted, pretzels covered in white yogurt, banana chips that have been dried and pieces of white chocolate.

These are just the beginning. With the popularity of the movie Frozen, there are endless possibilities for a winter themed birthday party. Let your imagination go wild and see what you can come up with.
